Kantha-style Stitching
Inspired by the kantha artisans of Bengal, this craft involves using simple running stitches to attach pieces of discarded fabric together. The beauty of this craft is that you can adjust the difficulty level to suit you, whether you choose to create intricate patterns or straight lines. Simple stitches can be rhythmic, perfect for soothing the brain after a busy day. The origins of kantha started with taking old fabric and incorporating them together to make new textiles and evolved into weaving intricate motifs onto the fabric. Traditionally a women's craft, techniques have been passed down through generations of female artisans in the Bengal regions.
The video above is of a recent workshop taught by a friend of Sunny Jar, Aleya, to adorn the curtains and cushions of the new R-urban classroom.

Indoor/balcony gardening
Just because summer’s outdoor gardening days are behind us doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the beauty of growing plants. Indoor or balcony gardening is a great way to bring nature into your home and enjoy the mental health benefits of caring for plants, all while staying cosy indoors. Creating your own indoor jungle helps to purify the air as you spend more time indoors as the cooler weather approaches. on your window ledge consider growing cold-hardy vegetables like kale, spinach, or lettuce, which can handle cooler October temperatures. Inside experiment with growing your own microgreens. They grow quickly in shallow trays, are packed with nutrients, and make a delicious topping for salads or sandwiches. You can reuse containers like yoghurt pots or shallow boxes to avoid buying new pots.
Bring the beautiful autumn colours inside
As you walk, gather natural treasures like pinecones, acorns, or beautiful leaves, which can be used to create an earth-friendly autumn decor or crafting. Maud and family select their favourite autumn leaves and preserve them by pressing them in between book pages to decorate their walls with the rich colours.
Once dried you can paint or write notes on them to gift to friends and family.
